First Assistant US Attorney - Kris served as Chief Operations Officer of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana. As the district's most senior executive career employee, he was responsible for supervising overall operations of the United States Attorney’s Office.

Criminal Chief Assistant US Attorney -Kris supervised the criminal division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana.  He was responsible for development and enforcement of policy relating to investigations, charging, discovery, plea agreements and sentencing of all criminal cases in the District of Montana. He was responsible for keeping the United States Attorney apprised of all matters occurring within the criminal division.  Kris engaged in daily consultations with the United States Attorney on matters of interest, policy and resource planning.

 

Unrivaled Trial Experience

As an Assistant US Attorney for 30 years, Kris personally litigated many civil and literally hundreds of criminal cases through trial in federal court on behalf of the United States.

Civil cases included defense and prosecution of claims under the Federal Tort Claims Act (personal injury, wrongful death), CERCLA, RCRA, bankruptcy statutes, and FLPMA litigation.

Criminal cases included prosecution of complex white collar crime, securities fraud, money laundering, wire fraud, environmental crimes including Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, RCRA and Oil Pollution Act, bankruptcy fraud, distribution of drugs, violent crime, firearms crimes, and Endangered Species Act violations.  

Kris was responsible for writing appellate briefs on behalf of the United States in civil and criminal appeals. Kris represented the United States before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in approximately 60 oral arguments.
